What is Four Ball in Golf?
Four Ball is a playing format that has two teams of two. They will compete head to head. What makes fourball different, is that all players will count their score like normal, however, a team will choose the better score between the two players on each hole.
You may hear golfer’s refer to this as Better Ball. And they would be correct in calling it this as it is the same game.
If you’ve watched the Ryder Cup, then you’ve seen Four Ball/Better Ball before.
Rules of Four Ball/Better Ball
The format can be used in both stroke play or match play.
For professionals there is no handicap system in tournaments such as the Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup. So it’s much simpler.
However, for amateurs, you can apply the handicap system to players’ scores to even the playing field.
For example, if a player is granted 4 shots extra, this will mean he can shave off four strokes from his final score. However, the holes will be determined beforehand. If a player gets an extra stroke on hole #1,#6,#8,#9, this will be subtracted from his gross score after the hole to create his net score. If a player scored a par on a hole he gets a stroke, his net will be a birdie.
All standard golf rules will come into play and every player will have to play their own ball with the same integrity they would normally.
If you are playing with caddies, caddies can provide help to both players on the same regardless of who’s caddie they are for that round.
Four Ball, also known as Better Ball, is a captivating playing format in golf where two teams of two golfers compete head-to-head. What distinguishes Four Ball from other formats is that each player’s score counts as normal, but the team selects the better score between the two players on each hole. This format, often showcased in prestigious events like the Ryder Cup, adds an extra layer of excitement and strategy to the game.
Understanding the rules of Four Ball is essential for both professionals and amateurs alike. While professionals compete without a handicap system, amateurs can utilize handicaps to level the playing field. Applying handicaps involves subtracting strokes from players’ scores on designated holes, ensuring fair competition.
Throughout a Four Ball match, standard golf rules apply, emphasizing integrity and sportsmanship. Even with the assistance of caddies, players must adhere to the rules independently, maintaining the integrity of the game.
Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a newcomer to the sport, Four Ball offers a dynamic and engaging experience that showcases teamwork, skill, and strategy on the golf course.
