What is a Tight Lie in Golf? How to Play It!

A tight lie in golf

A tight lie in golf is the term used when a player’s ball is on closely mowed grassed. The less grass between your ball and the ground, the tighter the lie.

In golf, identifying how your ball is lying, weather there be little grass, wet grass, hard ground or soft ground, is important as it can dramatically change how your golf club and ball come into contact. Therefore effecting the way the ball travels.

With the lie affecting your the way your ball travels, it is important to know when you have a tight lie and how to make subtle changes to your swing to maximize the result.

Understanding Tight Lies

What is a Tight Lie in Golf

A tight lie in golf refers to when your balls sitting on a hard surface with little to no grass underneath. Tight lies can be found all over the golf course.

This happens when either the grass has been purposely mowed down or when the ground is just hard. Sometimes, it can be just a bare patch where the gras has stopped growing. But all tight lies have one thing in common, little to no grass for your club to slide under the ball.

Common Scenarios Where Tight Lies Occur

The most common tight lie in golf occurs green side. Some golf holes have what we call an apron. This refers to a section of fairway that looks like a bib in front of a green. That section is often tightly mowed offering a tough chip for those who miss the green short.

However, tight lies can be found all over the golf course. Especially on inexpensive public courses where the maintenance team never worked at Augusta National. The only place you can actually remove a tight lie, is on the tee box as you can always tee it up. Unfortunately, wherever else you find a tight lie, you must play it as it lies.

If you’ve ever played links golf, you’ve definitely had a tight lie multiple times. Links golf is known for tightly mowed courses with tight lies virtually everywhere.

For me, playing in Canada, as soon as October hits and the temperature at night drops close to 0, the morning rounds offer quite a challenge as the ground is still very firm. If you’re a beginner and you’re from a colder climate, keep this in mind when you first start to play in the colder months.

Why Tight Lies Are Challenging

Tight lie are challenging for golfer because there is very little room for error. On a normal lie, the ball will sit up on half an inch of grass or more. This will allow for the club to slide underneath the ball if hit a little chunky. On a tight the ball will bounce of the ground and exaggerate your mishit.

It can also sometime be challenging to identify for beginners. If you’ve been playing for a few holes now and haven’t encounter a tight lie, you may over look it when it happens. Always be sure to evaluate how your ball lies before choosing your shot.

Techniques for Playing from Tight Lies

Adjusting Your Setup

If you are facing a tight lie on your approach shot and you still have a full iron (130-170 yards) in to the green, we need to make adjustment to our normal set up. Use these three adjustments to see better result:

  1. Move the back in your stance to ensure ball contact first, then ground
  2. Choke down on your grip to have more control
  3. Take a higher lofted cub to account for the added distance from the ball being back in your stance

Swing Adjustments

When swinging on a tight lie, we must understand that the common miss it hitting the ground before the ball. With the ball back in our stance we need to make sure that we hit down on the ball. This will require a steep downswing and cut off follow through.

Always keep in mind that it’s more a punchy low apex shot. We’re looking to create the cleanest contact and push the ball up near the green. We aren’t trying to hit a high loft hop and stop type of shot. A tight bare lie is penalizing and we are trying to limit the damage.

What we do not want to do is get too creative and try to hit a miracle shot and duff one. A tight lie is never fun but this is the situation we are in, we do our best to hit the cleanest shot we can.

Choosing the Right Club

Just like any lie, choosing the right club is essential. If you have a long way to go, adding a little more loft and hitting steep will do the trick.

If you are chipping, make sure to take a wedge with enough bounce. This way we can use the bounce when attacking the ball and won’t get stuck digging in the ground.

Practicing for Tight Lies

Emulating golf course tight lies can be challenging. However you can always use a hitting matt and just sloow the steps above regardless. It will be less rewarding at the time but it will ingrain the steps to follow. then when you get up to tight lie during a round, you’ll know what you need to do.

If its chipping on a tight lie, you may be able to find a practice green somewhere in your area that has a tight lie area. Very uncommon but you may just find one.

If you live in a colder climate, you may be able to get to range in fall and the ground my be firmer, this can help tremendously.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Two common mistakes to avoid:

  1. Make sure you put the ball in the back of your stance. Golfers often forgot to do this and hit behind the ball.
  2. Don’t try to pick the ball clean and try to scoop it in the air, hit down on the ball and left the clubs loft to the rest.
  3. Identify that it’s a tight lie. Some golfers will just get up to the ball and hit it. Make sure you evaluate your lie before hand and know that it is a tight lie!

How Course Conditions Affect Tight Lies

Firm vs. Soft Surfaces

If a tie lie is soft, it’s usually because it’s wet. When that happens you need to account for what that means normally. The ball will spin less so account for more roll out when chipping.

When the ground it is firm and your chipping, you can use the bounce more. So rely on the bounce and play the shot with confidence.
