What is a Good Handicap in Golf?
A good handicap in golf is relative to what we define good as. On average, males have a handicap of 10. On average, females have a handicap of 28. By those numbers, if you land somewhere near the averages that would easily be considered as good.
The handicap system was created to even the playing field between golfers of different skill levels. This will allow an intermediate player to compete against a highly skilled player in a match.
How golf handicaps are calculated
The easiest way to calculate your handicap is to download an app that will make the calculations for you. You will only need to input a few things such as, course played, tees plate, and your score. Then after a certain number of rounds the app will be able to calculate an accurate handicap for you.
A very popular app is SwingU. This app also allows for GPS while playing.
Manual calculation of your golf handicap:
Here is a summary of my last 20 rounds of golf
82,91,94,98,89,84,96,96,84,95,88,89,91,93,88,89,94,85,97,88
Once you have your last 20 rounds laid out, select the top 8 rounds. Now we take those 8 rounds and turn them into +/- scoring.
82(+10), 84(+12) , 84(+12), 88(+16), 89(+17), 88(+16), 85(+13), 88(+16)
Now we want to find the average score above/below part of these 8 rounds.
((10+12+12+16+17+16+13+16)/8)=14
Our handicap would be 14!
Now this calculation is a very simple calculation and does not consider slope or difficulty of the golf courses played. These ratings are assign to each course to help measure handicaps against the course. For example, if you’re playing a very easy course, the handicap system may not give you as many shots as you would get on a much harder course.
The standard handicap calculation will add a multiplier of 0.96 to keep course difficulty into account. Use the calculator below to calculate your handicap!

Use of a Golf Handicap
It can seem like having a score for a casual golfer may be a waste of time. However, there are many benefits of having a handicap score.
If you are a betting kind of person, this will allow you to compete with players above and below you in skill level. Ultimately, the person with the higher handicap will play the course at a different par. For example, if you are a 14 handicap and you want to bet against someone who is a scratch golfer, you will be given an extra 14 shots on the par of the course. This means if you finish the course 14 over par and they score +1, you will have a net score of even (0) and you will have beaten them by one stroke.
Another great feature to having a handicap is you can understand exactly where you stand on skill level. If you come to a point where you’d like to improve, you know exactly where you stand and can monitor through the rounds if what you are doing is having a positive or negative impact on your score.
If you are unsure on where you can improve, using an app will allow you to input even deeper stats from your golf rounds such as, Fairways in Regulation, Greens in Regulation, Putts per hole ETC.

What is a Scratch Golfer?
You may have heard the term Scratch Golfer before and are not sure exactly what that means. Scratch Golfer means someone who has a handicap of 0. Basically, a golf who shoots pretty close to par on every round.
It is also possible to have a positive handicap score. This means your average is below par! Most professional golfers will have positive handicaps.
Rad Conclusion
The concept of a good handicap in golf is subjective and relative to individual standards and aspirations. With average male golfers boasting a handicap around 10 and female golfers around 28, these figures provide a rough benchmark for what might be considered good. However, it’s crucial to recognize that the essence of handicaps lies beyond mere numbers; they exist to level the playing field and foster fair competition among golfers of differing skill levels.
Understanding how handicaps are calculated, whether through convenient apps like SwingU or manual calculation methods, empowers golfers to track their progress accurately. By utilizing handicap scores, golfers can engage in competitive matches regardless of skill discrepancies, making the game more enjoyable and inclusive. Moreover, handicaps serve as valuable tools for self-assessment and improvement, allowing golfers to pinpoint areas for development and refine their skills accordingly.
Whether aspiring to attain the status of a scratch golfer or aiming for a positive handicap score, the journey toward mastery in golf is one of continuous growth and refinement.
